Introducing the performer…

Swiss pianist and composer Jean-Sélim Abdelmoula has notched up a string of concert performances at venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall and Barbican Hall in London; the Palau de la Musica in Barcelona; the Koerner Hall in Toronto; the Sendesaal in Bremen; Carnegie Hall and 92Y (Buttenwieser Hall) in New York; and the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. His festival appearances include Lucern, Lavaux Classics, Ittinger Pfingstkonzerte, Prussia Cove Open Chamber Music, Düsseldorf Schumannfest and Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorprommen.

Jean-Sélim has received awards both for his piano playing and compositions. He took first prize at the 2012 Edvard Grieg International Composer Competition in Oslo, the 2013 Lausanne Concours d’Interprétation Musicale and the 2016 Premi de Musica de Cambra Montserrat Alavedra; the third prize at the 2015 Ciurlionis International Piano Competition in Vilnius; the 2015 Guildhall Wigmore Recital Prize in London; and the 2018 Lili Boulanger Memorial Fund Award in Boston. He was awarded the 2014-15 Rebanks Family Piano Fellowship at the Glenn Gould School in Toronto, and was invited by Sir András Schiff to give solo recitals across Europe as part of his 2016 “Building Bridges” concert series.

Jean-Sélim’s works have been performed by renowned musicians such as Heinz Holliger, Antje Weithaas, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Sylvia Nopper, Gilles Colliard, and Einar Steen-Nokleberg. Orchestre de Chambre de Toulouse, Swiss Chamber Soloists, Camerata Bern, Zürcher Kammerorchester, Sine Nomine Quartet and Ensemble Séquence have also played his compositions.

Jean-Sélim is an alumnus of Lausanne HEMU and Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he studied with pianists Christian Favre and Ronan O’Hora, and composer Julian Anderson. He has played in masterclasses with Gyorgy Kurtag, Ferenc Rados, Andras Schiff, Denes Varjon, Mitsuko Uchida, Imogen Cooper, Stephen Hough, Angela Hewitt, Richard Goode and Leon Fleisher, and has been advised on composition by Heinz Holliger and George Benjamin. In September 2018, he took up a place as one of two students taking part in the Sir András Schiff Performance Programme for Young Pianists at the Kronberg Academy, Germany.

Not only is Jean-Sélim Abdelmoula a fine pianist with great sensitivity and imagination, he’s also a major talent in composition. When he plays Bach, Chopin and Schubert, he does it with a composer’s understanding.
